What is synthetic plastic based rice? Synthetic plastic based rice is a substance that can kill a person overtime because synthetic rice has harmful chemicals like what they mix to make plastic and it does not rot easily. The synthetic plastic based rice is composed of four chemicals namely coloring, flavoring and coating agents usually found in normal products. It is the Dibutyl phthalate which is a plastic softener that may be dangerous to humans if consumed in the long term. It kills people overtime because it has plastic and it can clog in the digestive system in our body. A tradeoff, involves a sacrifice that must be made to obtain a certain product, service or experience, rather than others that could be made or obtained using the same required resources. That is very evident in people make and sell synthetic plastic rice in order to profit more from it since the cost to make is lower. They can profit more because they have the same price as the normal rice and has the same appearance therefore most people cannot differentiate.
An economic system is a system of production and exchange of goods and services as well as allocation of resources in a society. The economic system that will be focused on this blog is The Mankiw's principles. There are many things under the Mankiw's principles like the cost of Something is What You Give Up to Get It, meaning Decision-makers have to consider both the obvious and implicit costs of their actions. Rational people think at the margin meaning, a rational decision-maker takes action if and only if the marginal benefit of the action exceeds the marginal cost. markets are a good way to organize economic activity meaning Households and firms that interact in market economies act as if they are guided by an "invisible hand" that leads the market to allocate resources efficiently. The opposite of this is economic activity that is organized by a central planner within the government. Trade can make everyone better off meaning trade allows each person to specialize in the activities he or she does best. By trading with others, people can buy a greater variety of goods or services. Markets can sometimes improve economic outcomes and lastly that people faces a short run trade-off between inflation and unemployment meaning Reducing inflation often causes a temporary rise in unemployment. This tradeoff is crucial for understanding the short-run effects of changes in taxes,government spending and monetary policy. This article about rice is specifically about people facing trade-offs. This defines that to get one thing, you have to give up something else. In the case of synthetic rice, they went for profit in trade for the well-being of the people who buy rice and can't differentiate plastic rice from real rice. The demand for rice is really high especially in the Philippines since it is one of the country who produces mass amounts of rice and also one of the mass consumers of rice. The first sign of synthetic plastic based rice reportedly started from China last 2011. Then it had spread now to the Philippines specifically in Davao. According to themarysue.com and one Chinese restaurant association official even said and I quote " Eating three bowls of this plastic rice is like eating one plastic bag". The stakeholders or the people involved are mostly everyone because mostly everyone eats rice wether it's occasionally or often. The short term effect of selling the fake rice to the consumer is that the seller will earn more and more but the long term effect is that more and more people will die or get poisoned and the seller will get arrested and their factories foreclosed by the government. A University of the Philippines(U.P.) scientist named Ma. Conception Lizada even clarified to STAR newspaper company about the different types synthetic rice that there are and one of them is made out of corn which is good unlike the plastic rice that is being distributed in Davao right now. One of the causes that made lead them to produce the "fake" plastics rice is the higher return that they are getting for every sack they sell compared to the traditional rice which takes a longer time, this "fake" rice just takes a while to produce so they can save more time, increase production and produce more in a shorter time period. The consequence is that they will be arrested by authorities as said in television, radio and online media. It all of a sudden went viral simply because this product is a mass production necessity that is needed by mostly everyone since its rice, so there are more chances that people will get killed. Last July 13, 2015 they have found the alleged source of the synthetic plastic based rice was in a place in Davao called Hungry Mama's Kitchen. Based also on my research I have concluded that there are no other explanation on why those people making, selling or importing these synthetic plastic rice. They just made this for their own advantage, they are just too greedy. It's business without any ethics at all. The reliability of the data that was used in this blog are all from credible sites like philstar and the philippine inquirer.
That's how people face trade-offs and the other meaning of the Mankiw's priciple. Synthetic plastic based rice is a very pressing issue right now and we should all be careful in what stores we buy our rice. Don't judge the the location and the looks of the store always ask them, where do they buy their rice and if they look suspicious in answering your question, just look for another store.
